On 9th September 1942 this 102 Squadron aircraft was parked at Pocklington airfield when it was struck by Halifax R9449 when that aircraft was landing. Both aircraft were badly damaged. Halifax R9449 is the aircraft shown in this photograph with it's back broken underneath the slightly less damaged, but also back broken, Halifax W1239.
No crew.
Halifax W1239 was built to contract B.982938/39 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury. It was then taken on charge by 102 Squadron on 8th August 1942 who were based at Pocklington. It's last operational flight with 102 Squadron was on 1st / 2nd September 1942 when it would not fly fast enough with a bomb load to reach the target area at the correct time so it's crew jettisoned the bomb load and returned to Pocklington. After this date it was not used on operational flights and was probably parked on the edge of the airfield having work done to correct the flying speed / engine issue when it was destroyed on 9th September 1942. As a result of the collision on 9th September 1942 Cat.E2 damage was the assessment and it was struck off charge the same day.
