Halifax W1165 at Linton on Ouse airfield.

During the early evening of 23rd June 1942 this 35 Squadron aircraft was being flown on a non-operational flight when an engine failed. At 19.10hrs the pilot was making a three engined approach to land at Linton on Ouse airfield but was forced to try to overshoot. While the undercarriage was lowered it was not locked down and as the pilot also selected the flaps to be in the fully down position for landing the aircraft was already too low to successfully raise the flaps and then overshoot. A landing was made but the undercarriage then promtly collapsed on touching down. A court of inquiry was held which unfortunately saw the pilot taken off heavy bombers and his commission was terminated on 27th July 1942.

Pilot - P/O Dennis Jack Perry RAF (47358).

6 Crew - Names unknown.

Halifax W1165 was built to contract B982938/39 by English Electric Co.Ltd. at Samlesbury. On 16th June 1942 it was taken on charge by 158 Conversion Flight at East Moor but immediately transferred to 35 Squadron at Linton on Ouse the following day presumably because of operation needs. As a result of a landing accident at Linton on Ouse on 23rd June 1942 Cat.Ac/FA damage was the assessment. The damage was repaired on site and it returned to 35 Squadron on 20th September 1942 (after they moved to Graveley). It's AM Form 78 states that it sustained Cat.Ac/FB damage on 15th October 1942, probably as a result of battle damage. It was repaired on site and returned to 35 Squadron on 26th December 1942. On 3rd August 1943 it was transferred to 1666 Heavy Conversion Unit at Dalton. It was transferred to 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit at Lindholme on 9th October 1944 but on 7th December 1944 was finally placed in MU storage at 48 MU at Hawarden pending disposal. It was struck off charge on 14th December 1944.
