Hudson V8975 at Thornaby airfield.

On 18th June 1942 this No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was swung on take-off (or on landing; sources vary) and struck Hudson N7267 which was parked on Thornaby airfield damaging both aircraft. This Hudson was badly damaged.

Crew - Names unknown.


Hudson V8975 was built by Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California and purchased by the British Purchasing Commission without contract. It was delivered to Great Britain in June 1941 but was immediately assessed by No.43 Group Damage Assessors on 8th July 1941 and received a Cat.Ac damage assessment. It was repaired and on 7th August 1941 it went to 12 MU. Acceptance at MU it was issued to No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit on 22nd August 1941. On 16th September 1941 and then on 6th May 1942 it was assessed by No.43 Group D.A. with it being returned to 6 (C)OTU once servicable each time. As a result of the incident on 18th June 1942 Cat.E/FA damage was the damage assessment but it took until 1st September 1942 for it to be struck off charge.
