Oxford V4199 at Sherburn in Elmet airfield.

At 17.26hrs on 12th September 1942 this aircraft was allowed to stall while coming into land at Sherburn in Elmet airfield during a ferry flight, one wing dropped and it struck the ground. The aircraft was left slightly damaged. The No.7 Ferry Pilot Pool pilot had noticed some posts on the airfield as he approached and was attempting to hold off a landing when the stall occurred.

Pilot - S/O Ronald Joseph Pass ATA (M.584).

Oxford V4199 was built to contract B.55347/39 by Standard Motors Ltd. at Coventry and was awaiting collection in December 1941. It was immediately placed in MU storage and remained there until 8th March 1942 when it was taken on charge by 14 OTU at Cottesmore. The damage at Sherburn in September 1942 does not appear in the published Air Britain history and I would guess that when it landed at Sherburn it was in the process of being ferried into MU storage at the time. Minor Cat.A/FA damage would have been the damage assessment as it appears to have been repaired quickly. On 26th September 1942 it was indeed flown to MU storage where it remained until 10th November 1943. On that date it was taken on charge by 15 (P)AFU at Babdown Farm. On 6th June 1945 it was transferred to 16 PFTS at Hucknall but was the struck off charge on 11th October 1945.
