Hudson T9368 at Thornaby airfield.

On 28th January 1942 this No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit aircraft was badly damaged at Thornaby airfield when it overshot on landing, ran across a ditch which resulted in the undercarriage collapsing. The aircraft was written off but the crew are not though to have been seriously injured.

Pilot - P/O Grimshaw RAF.

Crew - Names unknown.


The pilot's full identity was probably Bert Grimshaw RAF (106808), he received a commission on 30th September 1941 to the rank of P/O on probation (emergency) and was promoted to F/O on 30th September 1942 and F/Lt on 30th September 1943. After his training he was later posted to 228 Squadron and was awarded the DFC for service with this unit, Gazetted on 28th March 1944. Sadly he was killed in a flying accident near Wrexham on 22nd August 1944 when Wellington HZ699 of Central Navigation School flew into Tower Mountain, near Wrexham.
Hudson T9368 was purchased without contract direct from Lockheed-Vega at Burbank, California by the British Purchasing Commisssion and delivered by ship to the UK in September 1940. It was transported to The Lockheed Assembly Division (UK)Ltd, at Speke where it was fitted with a gun turret, made ready for operational service and flight tested. It was then taken to 12 MU on 11th September 1940 and after acceptance it was issued to 206 Squadron at Bircham Newton on 5th October 1940. It was transferred to No.6 (C)O.T.U. on 8th December 1941. As a result of the incident at Thornaby on 28th January 1942 a Cat.E/FA damage assessment was made and it was struck off charge on 10th February 1942.
