Lysander T1569 at Clifton airfield.

On 7th September 1942 the Clifton airfield record book has the entry stating that a Lysander made a heavy landing, and the tail wheel was damaged. The aircraft belonged to 116 Squadron who were involved in calibration equipment across the country around this time and their record book mentions the incident stating no injuries resulted.

Pilot - Sgt S F Hetherington RAFVR (1107916).

Passenger - Name unknown.


Sgt Hetherington was posted in to 116 Squadron from 111 Squadron on 19th July 1942.
Lysander T1569 was built to contract 23637/39 by Westland's at Yeovil, after MU acceptance it was delivered to 268 Squadron at Bury St.Edmunds in November 1940. It transferred to 116 Squadron at Hendon in 1941 and moved with the unit to Heston on 20th April 1942. It sustained Cat.A(c)/FA at (or near) Clifton and was repaired on site. After repair it WAS returned to 116 Squadron at Heston and served here until being struck off charge on 4th October 1943.
