Wellington R1143 at Elvington airfield.

On 20th June 1942 this 25 O.T.U. aircraft was being flown in the York area when it suffered engine failure. A landing was made a Elvington but the aircraft crashed and it sustained damage to the bomb doors, flaps, propellers and the port wing fuel tanks. The damage suggests that the undercarriage legs collapsed.

Wellington R1143 was built to contract 992424/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden and was awaiting collection in August 1940. It was initially allotted to 12 MU on 29th September 1940 but was never received by them. It was then received by 48 MU on 4th October 1940. While with this unit it sustained some form of damage on 15th April 1941 to Cat.Ac status. The aircraft was taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. on 10th June 1941 at Finningley. The aircraft was again found damaged on 24th October 1941, perhaps found damaged during a routine inspection rather than the result of a flying accident. It was repaired on site by a team from Vickers and returned to 25 O.T.U. on 17th January 1942. As a result of the accident at Elvington on 20th June 1942 Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment. The aircraft was transported for repair in works at Sywell. In early September 1942 it was issued to 38 MU and was then taken on charge by 15 O.T.U. at Harwell on 29th November 1942 before finally moving to 21 O.T.U. at Moreton in Marsh on 24th June 1943. The aircraft was found badly damaged during a routine inspection and was struck off charge on 12th March 1944.
