Wellington BJ887 at Topcliffe airfield.

On 11th September 1942 this 419 Squadron aircraft had landed at Topcliffe airfield and was parked off the runway when it was struck by 405 Squadron Halifax BB212 which itself had been damaged on Ops and was returning to base.

Wellington BJ887 was built to contract B124362/40 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Hawarden, Chester and was awaiting collection in August 1942. It was taken on charge by 419 Squadron, who were then based at Leeming, on 3rd August 1942. 419 Squadron moved to Topcliffe on 18th August 1942. It was slightly damaged in some form of flying accident on 3rd September 1942 but no details of what happened are known. The damage was repaired on site by a team from Vickers at Weybridge and it returned to 419 Squadron on 8th September 1942. As a result of the damage sustained there on 11th September 1942 Cat.E2 damaged was the result of the assessment, after which it was struck off charge.
