Hampden Mk.I AD964 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.
On 4th January 1942 this 49 Squadron aircraft took off from Scampton at 10.21hrs to undertake an operational flight to bomb Bremerverde. The aircraft was hit twice by flak over Germany, near Cuxhaven, that wounded the rear gunner. The pilot set course for the nearest airfield in England but they must have got off course on their flight back because they ended up landing at Driffield at 16.42hrs. The rear gunner was taken to the base hospital with a broken left leg and numerous shrapnel wounds to his left side.

Harold Taylor was killed on 13th April 1942 when 49 Squadron Hampden AT196 crashed neat Fitling, East Yorkshire.
