Spitfire AD475 damaged in the air, landed at Catterick airfield.
During the morning of 2nd January 1942 this 145 Squadron aircraft was flown on a simulated gun camera training exercise combined with low flying. The aircraft took off from Catterick airfield at 10.30hrs. At around 10.50hrs when the pilot was focusing on the gunsight target he did not notice that a set of high tension cables that were in his path and the propeller spinner hit the cables. This occurred around four miles north east of the airfield. Despite this damage the pilot appears to have remained in the air and landed back at Catterick five minutes later with a second aircraft also undertaking the same training exercise.
Pilot - Sgt James Kenneth Rostant RAFVR (1387079).
