Spitfire AD247 at Hutton Cranswick airfield.

On 17th January 1942 this 610 Squadron aircraft was stationary on the ground at Hutton Cranswick airfield when it was struck by Spitfire AB919 that was landing at the time. Both aircraft sustained minor damage.

Spitfire AD247 was built to contract B.981687/39 by Vickers Armstrong's Ltd. at Castle Bromwich and was delivered to 24 MU at Ternhill on 14th September 1941. A week later on 21st September 1941 it was taken on charge by 129 Squadron at Westhampnett. On 30th November 1941 it was transferred to 610 Squadron at Leconfield and moved to Hutton Cranswick on 14th January 1942. As a result of the damage sustained on 17th January 1942 Cat.E/FA damage was the assessment on site but it must have been reasonably intact as it was taken to AST Ltd at Hamble for further assessment where it was Re-Cat.B and repaired. On 16th August 1942 after a short period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 610 Squadron at Ludham. On 12th April 1943 it was transferred to the 67th Observation Group. USAAF, based at Membury. On 31st May 1943 this unit was re-designated 67th Reconn. Group. In December 1943 it moved with this unit to Middle Wallop. On 23rd March 1944 it was transferred back to the RAF and taken on charge by 303 Squadron at Ballyhalbert. On 30th April 1944 it moved with this unit to Horne and on 18th June 1944 with the unit to Westhampnett. It crashed on 26th July 1944 when ran out of fuel and was belly landed near Caen. Cat.E/FB damage was the assessment and it was struck off charge.
