Hurricane Z2417 near Goole.
On 2nd October 1941 the pilot of this aircraft was undertaking a ferry flight with No.4 Aircraft Delivery Flight when he became lost and disorientated while flying in cloud in the Goole area. He had collected the aircraft was Martlesham Heath and was attempting to deliver it to Grangemouth with a refuelling stop (probable overnight stop) being planned at Clifton airfield, York. Because of the poor weather and impending darkness he baled out when the aircraft ran low on fuel in the Goole area at 20.00hrs.
Exactly where the aircraft crashed is unclear. Historians Eric Barton, Albert Pritchard and Ken Reast spent some tome in the Goole area speaking to local people and also field walking suggested areas for a number of crash sites and they believed to have located the crash site of Hurricane Z2417 in 2007. I have been given a collection of small parts Eric recovered from this location though all were in the state they were found. Having cleaned them, most are unused aircraft modification plates and other items in the bag have Spifire part numbers on them. From what I can tell Eric did not bag items in error but it appears they perhaps located a Spitfire site rather than a Hurricane site. This location is just north of River Don and the Aire and Calder Navigation, south-west of Goole. I would welcome information to suggest what was going on in this area. Was it an area where crashed aircraft were stored prior to removal?
Pilot - Sgt Arthur Carl Young RCAF (R/78065).
Hurricane Z2417 was built to contract B.62309/39 by The Hawker Aircraft Company Ltd. at the Kingston/Langley/Brooklands assembly plants and was awaiting
collection on 31st January 1941. After a period of MU storage it was taken on charge in April 1941 by 306 Squadron based at Northolt. 306 Squadron converted
to Spitfires in July 1941 so the aircraft was transferred to 607 Squadron at Castletown later the same month, on 20th August 1941 it moved with this unit to
Martlesham Heath. It was being flown to Grangemouth on 2nd October 1941 in the care of No.4 Aircraft Delivery Flight (4 ADF) when it was crashed in
the Goole area and Cat.E2/FA damage was the damage assessment. This saw it struck off charge.
