Wellington X9924 at Linton on Ouse airfield.
On the night of 20th / 21st September 1941 the crew of this 57 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb Frankfurt. They took off from Feltwell at 19.20hrs and released their bomb load over the target area from 8,200 feet at 22.55hrs but the results of their bombing was not seen by them. Owing to fog over the general Feltwell area all 57 Squadron crews were diverted away to land. The crew of Wellington X9924 landed at Linton on Ouse airfield at 02.50hrs but the aircraft overshot, ran beyond the end of the runway and struck a heap of drain pipes that were in the process of being installed.
