Wellington W5518 at Pocklington airfield.
On 3rd October 1941 the pilot of this 405 Squadron aircraft was carrying out his first solo flight in a Wellington, he had successfully carried out flying one basic circuit of Pocklington airfield and had landed. He was intending on taking off again so taxied to the other end of the runway and was about to begin a take off run when he noticed another Wellington coming into land on the same runway. Assuming that the pilot of this landing Wellington had not seen his aircraft he applied power to the engines and taxied past the end of the runway with the intention of turning onto the perimeter track to get clear of the runway. Unfortunately his aircraft's brake pressure was low and did not have much effect, so the aircraft over-ran into the boundary hedge damaging the rear fuselage.
Pilot - Sgt James Henry Foy RCAF (R/78478).
This pilot's life is well documented. He was awarded the DFC for service with 405 Squadron, Gazetted on 13th August 1943.
