Oxford V3222 near Hood Green, Barnsley.

On 27th September 1941 this pilot was undertaking a training flight out of Cranwell when he became lost in fog in the Barnsley area, after running low on fuel he abandoned the aircraft and landed safely. The aircraft crashed in the region of Stainborough Fold Farm, Hood Green, Barnsley. The aircraft was operating out of Cranwell airfield pending transfer to the parent unit at Church Lawford.

Oxford V3222 was built to contract B.55346/39 by The De Havilland Aircraft Co. Ltd. at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in August 1940. It was taken on charge by the RAFC on 5th October 1940 and was used at Cranwell. On 15th June 1941 it was transferred to 2 CFS based at Church Lawford but remained at Cranwell for flying duties and as a result of the incident near Hood Green on 27th September 1941 Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded.
