Tiger Moth T7051 at Yeadon airfield.
On 26th August 1941 this trainee pilot made a heavy landing at Yeadon slightly damaging the 20 E.F.T.S. aircraft.
Pilot - LAC Ian Anthony Waugh RAFVR (656805).
Ian Waugh later received his commission to the rank of P/O on probation (emergency) on 25th February 1942 (116405). He was promoted
to F/O on probation (war subs) on 1st October 1942 and F/Lt (war subs) on 25th February 1944. Post War he remained in the RAF and on 22nd
May 1947 he transferred to the Aircraft Control Branch. He was appointed to a permanent commission of F/Lt on 1st February 1951 (with
seniority of 1st September 1945). After a remarkable period of long service he finally retired on 25th August 1970.
Tiger Moth T7051 was built to contract 20916/39 by the Motor Motor Car Company Ltd. at Cowley and was awaiting collection in December
1940, it was not built for the civilian market as many other Tiger Moths damaged in Yorkshire around this same date were. The aircraft
was taken on charge by 12 EFTS at Prestwick in January 1941 but on 22nd March 1941 12 EFTS disbanded and the aircraft was transferred to
20 EFTS at Yeadon around that date. As a result of the mishap on 26th August 1941 Cat.A/FA damage was recorded and the aircraft was repaired
on site and returned to the unit. On 9th January 1942 the unit was disbanded and aircraft was placed into MU storage. On 31st May 1942 it
was transferred to the SAAF as "2476" and shipped to South Africa where it joined the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). With
the war over the aircraft was placed in storage in South Africa with a view to selling it to the civilian market, it was located the
registration ZS-BBP but this was not taken up and the registration was eventually cancelled on 22nd September 1948. After this date nothing
more of the aircraft is known.
