Wellington R1448 at Linton on Ouse airfield.
On the night of 8th / 9th August 1941 this 218 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb the Blohm and Voss Works at Hamburg. The crew took off from Marham airfield in Norfolk at 22.41hrs. Owing to cloud over the target area this crew released their bomb load over Kiel. On their return to England the crew diverted north owing to fog over Norfolk and landed at Linton on Ouse at 05.25hrs without incident. Whilst taking off from Linton on Ouse later on 9th August 1941 the pilot attempted to raise the undercarriage prematurely, the aircraft was not airborne and undercarriage collapsed.

William Woodmason was awarded the DFC for service with 218 Squadron, Gazetted in February 1942.
George Isbell was also awarded the DFc for service with 218 Squadron, Gazetted in September 1941.
Allan Mclean was killed on 10th June 1942 while flying in 215 Squadron Wellington BB514 in India. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Singapore Memorial.
Herbert Price was killed on 28th July 1942 while flying 156 Squadron Wellington BJ840 when the aircraft failed to return from Ops to Hamburg.
John Riley was killed when Wellington R1646 crashed at Glen Clunie, Scotland on 19th January 1942 while instructing with 20 O.T.U.. He is buried at Dyce Old Cemetery.
