Wellington R1216 at Snaith airfield.

On the night of 16th / 17th September 1941 the crew of this 150 Squadron aircraft undertook an operational flight to bomb Karlsruhe and took off from Snaith at 19.00hrs. Because of an air-raid warning over Snaith at the time the crew of this aircraft was returning this crew was refused permission to land so had to circle for half an hour. In poor visibility on his approach to land the pilot misjudged the height of the aircraft due to haze created by a reflected floodlight. The aircraft landed long, overshot the runway and ran onto rough ground beyond the end of the runway.
