Spitfire P8662 at Thornaby airfield.
On 13th October 1941 this aircraft was in the care of No.1 Aircraft Delivery Flight and being ferried between Ibsley and Peterhead airfields. It had been on charge with 118 Squadron at Ibsley but this aircraft was a Mk.IIa variant and the squadron was converting to Mk.5b aircraft so was being transferred out. During the flight north a landing was made at Thornaby airfield at 17.35hrs, probably to refuel and possibly to stay overnight given the time of year. On the approach to land the undercarriage did not lower but the warning horn in the cockpit did not sound so the pilot went in to land. Subsequently the aircraft was damaged.
Pilot - P/O R G Wyatt RAF (possibly P/O Raymond Geoffrey Wyatt RAF (86405)).
