Spitfire P7284 at Leconfield airfield.

On 10th October 1941 this 610 Squadron aircraft was taxying with at least one other aircraft prior to taking off at Leconfield airfield when the aircraft turned off the runway and onto a patch of soft ground. The pilot brakes on this soft ground which caused the tail to rise and the propeller hit the ground.

Pilot - Sgt Edward Jean Francois Joseph Feyten RAFVR (1299916).


This pilot was born in Belgium in 1909 and was known by the above name, or by his Belgian variant Eduard Frans Jan Jozef Feyten. He was posted from 57 OTU to 610 Squadron on 7th October 1941 and was killed on 18th April 1942 when 610 Squadron Spitfire AA942 crashed into the North Sea.
The aircraft was repaired and transferred to 350 Squadron on 14th November 1941 but crashed at Valley on the transfer flight.
