Hampden P1303 at Finningley airfield.

On 9th August 1941 this 25 Operational Training Unit aircraft overshot on landing at Finningley at 01.20hrs during a night training flight. The aircraft crashed off the end of the runway and through a hedge.

Hampden P1303 was built to contract 773239/38 by Handley Page Ltd. at Radlett and was awaiting collection in December 1939. It was received by 9 MU on 16th December 1939 and after a lengthy period of MU storage it was taken on charge by 106 Squadron at Finningley on 23rd September 1940. The aircraft later transferred to No.5 Group Target Towing Flight based at Finningley / Driffield on 4th February 1941 and was then taken on charge by 25 O.T.U. at Finningley at the start of March 1941, when the unit formed. As a result of the incident on 9th August 1941 Cat.B/FA damage was the damage assessment and it was repaired on site. On 31st December 1941 it transferred to the care of 14 O.T.U. based at Cottesmore but on 29th April 1942 it crashed near Cottesmore (Cat.E2/FA Burnt damage recorded) with the crew of two being killed.
