Tiger Moth N9430 probably at Upper Cumberworth.

On 23rd October 1941 the pilot of this 20 E.F.T.S. aircraft was undertaking a training flight out of Yeadon airfield when he attempted a forced landing in a field near Cumberworth for unknown reasons. The aircraft undershot, struck a stone wall and sustained damage to main planes, airscrew, engine and undercarriage. The aircraft belonged to 20 EFTS who were based at Yeadon and their record book states that the aircraft was force-landed near "Cumberworth, Yorkshire" I cannot find a Cumberworth in Yorkshire, however, there is a Cumberworth near Skegness, Lincolnshire but there are not many stone walls in this area and this would probably be out of range of the fuel tanks. I would therefore suggest the location maybe either Upper or Lower Cumberworth near Denby Dale in West Yorkshire (where there are stone walls and this is well within range of the aircraft's fuel tank) or possibly Kimberworth, Rotherham.

Pilot - LAC Frederick Leslie Garrett RAF (656610).

This was the pilot's second mishap in three days, on 21st October 1941 he damaged Tiger Moth L6935 near Bingley. He finshed the course at Yeadon and then sailed for Canada where he trained at 36 EFTS in Alberta, Canada, beginning the course on 24th January 1942. He is listed as leaving the course without completing it. Nothing more is known of him after this.
Tiger Moth N9430 was built to contract 778402/38 by The De Havilland Aircraft Co. Ltd. at Hatfield and was awaiting collection in December 1939. It was first taken on charge by 12 EFTS at Prestwick early in 1940 and on and unknown date in 1941 it was transferred to 20 EFTS at Yeadon. As a result of the damage sustained in the forced landing on 23rd October 1941 Cat.B/FA damage was recorded, it was taken away by road and repaired in works. On completion of the repair and after a period of storage it was taken on charge by 25 (Polish) EFTS at Hucknall before transferring to 3 EFTS at Shellingford where the aircraft served until the unit disbanded on 31st March 1948. After this it was placed into long term MU storage to await disposal. It was struck off charge on 5th June 1950.
