Hudson N7343 at Thornaby airfield.

On 21st August 1941 this 608 Squadron aircraft suffered from an undercarriage collapsing at the east end of the East-West runway at Thornaby airfield. The details surrounding this incident are not known. No injuries were reported. The accident occurred on an non-operational flight.

Hudson N7343 was built to contract 791587/38 by Lockheed at Burbank, California and after delivery to the UK in Autumn 1939 it was received by 27 MU on 3rd November 1939. It was then taken on charge by 206 Squadron at Bircham Newton on 16th February 1940. It moved onto 220 Squadron at Thornaby on 5th April 1941 and was then transferred to 608 Squadron at Thornaby on 2nd July 1941. As a reuslt of the mishap on 21st August 1941 Cat.A/FA damage was the damage assessment and the repair took until 8th October 1941. It was initially returned to 608 Squadron but days later on 16th October 1941 it was transferred to No.6 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit. It had a Cat.Ac damage assessment made against it on 7th November 1941 which took until 29th November 1941 to make it servicable. On 29th January 1942 it was again deemed unservicable and a repair on site this took until 14th March 1942 for it to be returned to the unit. It failed to return from a Met. Flight over the North Sea on 18th May 1942, it was probably lost in the area off the mouth of the River Tees with the loss its then crew. Cat.E(m) damage would have been the damage assessment and it was struck off charge on 20th May 1942.
