Hampden AE352 near Pocklington airfield.

On the night of 20th / 21st September 1941 this 44 Squadron aircraft was used to fly an operational sortie to bomb Berlin. This aircraft took off from Waddington at 19.50hrs. Owing to weather conditions rapidly deteriorating a recall signal was sent out but four of the 44 Squadron aircraft failed to receive the order to return to base and continued to the target. This aircraft was one of the four to fly on and bomb Berlin, they bombed from 8,000 feet at 00.15hrs. On their return towards Lincolnshire they must have picked up a further diversion signal as this and others who bombed headed towards Yorkshire to land. The crew of this aircraft managed to find Pocklington airfield, they over-flew the airfield but did not land. At this point the aircraft began to run out of fuel, with the starboard engine then failed so the aircraft was put down in a field around a mile north of Pocklington at 04.40hrs. Minor damage resulted.
