Tiger Moth T7029 at (or near) Brough airfield.

On 14th October 1940 this 4 EFTS aircraft was being used on a training flight over the general area of Brough airfield when the pilot, who was flying solo, "flattened out too high and allowed the aircraft to drop in a stalled condition". The aircraft struck the ground and was damaged but the pilot escaped injury.

Pilot - LAC George Clifton Allenby RAFVR (1053554).

Tiger Moth T7029 was built to contract 20916/39 by The Morris Motor Company Ltd. at Cowley and was awaiting collection in Octobr 1940. It was taken on charge immediately by 4 E.F.T.S. at Brough where it carried the code "-77". The published history of the aircraft makes no mention of it being damaged on 14th October 1940 but it clearly was and Cat.M/FA damage was the likely grade of damage assessment. It would have been repaired on site at Brough and continued to serve with 4 E.F.T.S. until being withdrawn from service and placed in long term MU storage pending disposal. It was eventually sold for scrap on 23rd July 1950.

George Allenby was later posted to 258 Squadron and was killed on 18th May 1941 when Hurricane Z2700 crashed off Shoreham, Sussex. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. He was still just eighteen years old.
