Blenheim L6778 at Catterick airfield.

On an unknown date but early in the month of April 1940 this 222 Squadron aircraft sustained damage on Catterick airfield. On 8th April 1940 60 MU recovered the aircraft from Catterick. In March 1941 it was converted to an instructional airframe and coded 3225M but details surrounding the damage at Catterick are not known. The book "From Dusk Until Dawn" by T.W.Kitching, a history of 219 Squadron, gives an account of a "borrowed" Blenheim which landed at Catterick without any brakes and it overshot crashing onto the A1 road narrowly missing an army convoy. This brief account could relate to the incident to L6778 but without proper details in the book identifying it is difficult.

Pilot - Name unknown.

It is likely that it was being delivered to 219 Squadron (based at Catterick) at the time of its mishap but there is no proof of this in official records. Blenheim L6778 was built to contract 588371/36 by A.V. Roe Ltd at Chadderton and was awaiting collection in October 1939. It was delivered to 145 Squadron at Croydon in November 1939 and moved on to 222 Squadron at Duxford early in 1940. 222 Squadron ceased operating Blenheim's in March 1940 and on paper any transfer to another unit did not happen. I would suggest that it was being flown to Catterick with the intention of transferring it to 219 Squadron but as the aircraft sustained damage and was taken away for repair before any paperwork went through it was never technically taken on charge by 219 Squadron.
