Hurricane L1717 at Church Fenton airfield.

On 25th October 1940 the pilot of this 306 Squadron aircraft accidently belly landed on the airfield at Church Fenton while he was undertaking his first training flight in a Hurricane. He apparently forgot to lower the undercarriage! He was not injured and the aircraft was soon repaired.

Hurricane L1717 was built to contract 527112/36 by The Hawker Aircraft Company Ltd. at Kingston / Brooklands and was awaiting collection in June 1938. After a period of storage at an unrecorded MU it was taken on charge by the RAE at Farnborough but no date for this is given. The aircraft returned to MU store until being taken on charge on 28th August 1940 by 306 Squadron based at Church Fenton when the unit formed. On 25th October 1940 it sustained damage at the airfield following this landing and Cat.M/FA was recorded. It was repaired on site and moved with the unit to Ternhill on 7th November 1940. On 26th November 1940 it crashed sustaining Cat.W/FA damage in forced landing near Shrewsbury, Shropshire, after an engine fire.
