Ju88 4D+KL near Fraisthorpe, Bridlington.
On 15th August 1940 many Luftwaffe aircraft were in the process of attacking Driffield airfield. This aircraft had already bombed Driffield airfield when it was
attacked and shot down by a Hurricane belonging to 73 Squadron, it later crash-landed very close to the cliff tops near Hamilton Hill Farm, near Fraisthorpe to
the south of Bridlington. The Ju88 pilot managed to force land the aircraft on farmland and the crew escaped serious injury, they were captured by members of the
Durham Light Infantry as they were attempted to set fire to their aircraft and were partly successful in destroying the cockpit area.
Pilot - Uffz Ludwig von Lorentz (or Lorenz?), PoW.
Observer - Uffz Heinrich Kenski, PoW.
Wireless Operator - Uffz Heinrich Prumann (or Trumann?), PoW.
Gunner - Gefr Johann Gobel, PoW.
P/O Carter had initially claimed this aircraft as one that he had shot down, however Sgt Alexander McNay RAF (741569)
had a much stronger claim. Sgt McNay was later given the credit in shooting it down. Sadly Alexander McNay was killed only
days after this incident when, on 5th September 1940 he was flying Hurricane P3224 off Essex and was shot down into the sea. His
body was never found and he was twenty two years old. He had already survived being attacked and injured on 14th June 1940 in a
Hurricane which he had to force land in France. His name was not McNEY as quoted in more modern publications.
