This incident is almost certainly erroneous but is included here to clarify it and hopefully gain more information. In 1944 author Brian Rapier credited an unidentified "Lancaster" aircraft as having crashed on Scales Moor, Whernside. No other reference to this has been found in official sources. Given the terrain it is unlikely to have been a forced landing but could be an incorrect reference to one of the other two aircraft which crashed on Whernside in the War and the type being mis-identified.
I also have note of the date of 1st September 1944 but cannot pin this to any specific reference.
