Javelin droptank on Great Whernside.

A Javelin fuel drop-tank is to be seen on the back of Great Whernside. When it was released or by which aircraft is not known but it must have been empty as a full one would surely have sustained more damaged on striking the ground. The 228 Operational Conversion Unit record book mentions that during February 1958 one of their Javelins was forced to jettison its external drop tanks but does not state where this occurred. It is possible that this was when this tank arrived on the moorland near Great Whernside.

I paid this drop tank a visit in October 2008 on a wet day. Photograph - Mr Andy Hunter - on a better day.
