On 15th July 1992 this pilot had flown the aircraft from Liverpool (Speke) to Leeds-Bradford earlier in the day to be given an instructor examination on twin engined aircraft. He had then left Leeds-Bradford at 14.25hrs to make the return flight using visual flying for navigation. The aircraft entered low cloud over the Skipton area and was seen to be flying lower than the surrounding hills ar 14.50hrs near Slaidburn. It was heard to crash moments later and search party later found the wreckage of the aircraft on Croasdale Fell in the Forest of Bowland, sadly the pilot had been killed in the accident. Despite being a very experienced pilot the crash almost certainly occurred because he simply wasn't flying high enough having flown off his intended route in poor weather. Technically this accident occurred in Lancashire but the hill was in Yorkshire before the boundary changes in the 1970s.
Pilot - Mr Robert Gornall, aged 59, of Woolton, Liverpool. Killed. Burial location unknown.
The aircraft was registered to Liverpool Flying Club Ltd. and was based at Speke airfield.
