Spitfire BL675 at "Normanby, Yorkshire".

During the afternoon of 3rd June 1942 this 332 Squadron aircraft was flown on an endurance test flight that was due to last in the region of five hours. The squadron was based at Catterick airfield and where this test flight was flown is not known though it could be assumed that it was simply not circling the general area of Catterick for that considerable length of time. After three hours of flying the aircraft's engine cut out but the fuel gauge was found to be showing that there was still some 25 gallons of fuel left in the tank despite them being empty. The pilot made a gliding descent and a wheels-up forced landing in a field with the location given on the AM Form 1180 as "Old Manor Farm, Normanby, Yorkshire". Which Normanby this relates to is anyone's guess. I would throw my hat onto it being the Manor Farm, Normanby, near Robin Hoods Bay because the pilot gave an interview to the IWM (#6, 25mins) where his details fit with the location. In this interview he stated that on one occasion he was flying off the Yorkshire coast when the fuel ran out, he flew back toward land and crash landed above some cliffs.
