Hurricane Z7049 near Ireby.

On 15th May 1943 the pilot of this aircraft was undertaking a training flight and after fifty minutes in the air the aircraft's engine failed. The pilot selected a field at Whitrigg near Ireby to make a forced landing but as he was about to land he noticed obstacles in the selected field so changed his selected field at the last moment. The aircraft was slightly damaged in making the rough landing in the resulting force landing. It was later found that a problem with the carburettor float needle had jammed because of a maintainance fault and caused the engine to fail.

Pilot - Sgt W H Reese RCAF (R/141321).
