Canberra WJ824 on High Pike, Caldbeck Fells.

On 29th January 1963 this 58 Squadron aircraft was being flown on a night time low level training exercise which took the crew over the north-west of England. While flying over Cumbria the aircraft flew into bad weather and low cloud was covering the hills. The aircraft struck the ground on High Pike and disintergrated. The aircraft was reported as missing when it failed to return to base at Wyton and an intensive search was put into operation. After the tail plane of an aircraft was spotted on High Pike the following day local people set out from Caldbeck and found the crash site. They returned to Caldbeck and guided the RAF rescue team to the crash site later in the day when the bodies of the two airmen were recovered.

Peter Broughton received a commission to the rank of Acting P/O on probation from the rank of Cadet on 30th January 1952 (with his period of service to count from 29th August 1951). He was graded as P/O on 14th November 1952 and was later promoted to F/O on 29th November 1953 and F/Lt on 29th May 1957. He was appointed to a permanent commission in the RAF as F/Lt on 1st October 1960. I thank his daughter for contacting me.

John Almond appears to have been in the RAF as far back as 1946 and possibly slightly earlier. He received a commission to the rank of P/O on 9th December 1948 (with his period of service to count from 3rd May 1946). He was promoted to F/O on 9th December 1949, F/Lt on 19th June 1952 and S/Ldr on 1st July 1961.
