Hurricane V6913 near Coniston.

On 8th December 1941 this 59 Operational Training Unit aircraft pilot became lost flying in cloud and made a forced landing eight miles south west of Ambleside. The distance and direction suggests it was in the Coniston area. Another pilot of the same unit force landed near Ullswater on the same date. The were based at Crosby on Eden.

Pilot - Sgt Frederick Gilbert Woollard RAFVR (1312058).


This pilot was born on 20th December 1920 and was the son of Gilbert Bertram and Marion (nee Thompson) Woollard. He was later posted to 33 Squadron. On 20th April 1942 he crashed Hurricane BG862 and on 3rd July 1942 he crashed Hurricane BE643 after which he appears to have been injured. He later served with 61 OTU and 2 TEU. On 18th July 1944 he crashed 41 Squadron Spitfire MB841 that saw him receive facial injuries for which he was treated at East Grinsted Hospital and became one of the Guinea Pig club members. He married in the Forest of Dean area in 1945 but in 1957 his family emigrated to Australia where he died in 2003.
