Schweizer 269c G-TASS on Bowscale Fell.

On 10th May 2004 this heicopter was being flown with a crew of two. The AAIB report stated that the aircraft's owner had employed an experienced helicopter flying instructor to take him on a training exercise through mountainous country. During the exercise through the Lake District the aircraft was being flown along the side of the valley between Bowscale Fell and Carrock Fell when the engine failed at 14.25hrs. The instructor took control and realising that the helicopter was loosing height and unlikely to make a landing on the valley floor he made a descent into the sloping grassy hillside. The helicopter struck the ground and then bounced and finally rolled down the hillside and came to rest badly damaged. The trainee pilot was not seriously injured but the instructor was initially trapped in but freed by witnesses to the incident and later taken to hospital.

Instructor Pilot - Mr Geoffrey Day, aged 57, of Boston, Lincolnshire. Injured.

Pupil Pilot - Mr Austin Tasker, aged 35, of Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

The helicopter was owned by the pupil, Mr Austin Tasker, at the time of the crash. He became the registered owner in August 2002 with it having been previously registered in the USA, Holland and Germany.
