Barracuda LS629 near Bootle.

On 15th November 1944 this aircraft was being ferried between two airfields by an ATA pilot, it was been flown on the west coast route to avoid the high ground of the Lake District. While in the Bootle area a hydraulic pipe burst causing hydraulic fluid to be sprayed into the cockpit and over the pilot. At 11.30hrs he made a wheels-up landing in what was described as a "very small field" near Bootle with the wheels retracted. An investigation found that the end of the hydraulic pipe had been incorrectly formed at the time of manufacture and had failed. He was commended for "displaying exceptional airmanship" for landing the aeroplane.

Pilot - T/O Gerard Burnett (USA) ATA.
