Battle L5011 near Low Meathop.

On 26th February 1941 this No.6 Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit aircraft was being flown from Kirton in Lindsay to Ringway airfield, during the flight the pilot had the mis-fortune to loose his map and eventually he flew into poor visibility and became lost. Eventually the aircraft was running out of fuel so he attempted a forced landing near Low Meathop but the engine cut out as he approached the selected field and the aircraft struck the ground.

Pilot - P/O Michal Eugeniusz Marczenko PAF (P/76813). Uninjured.

Possible Passenger - Sgt A V Spencer (only reference to his name has been found in Ian Tyler's book on Cumbrian Aviation.)

Michal Marczenko was born in February 1911. Little else is currently known about him other than he may have served in the Admin and Special Duties Branch of the RAF later in the war. He is recorded elsewhere on the internet as having died in 1986.
