Westland Wallace K8681 near Bootle.

On Monday 16th May 1938 this military aircraft was force landed in a field near Seaton Hall, Bootle but struck a hedge slightly after a wheel dug into the ground, the aircraft tipped up onto its nose and was slightly damaged. The aircraft was being flown to the Eskmeals gunnery range at the time of the incident. Westland Wallace's were used to tow targets by No.1 Anti-Aircraft Co-operation Unit (A.A.C.U.) on the range at the time. It is believed that the aircraft was later repaired and flown out of the field because a local newspaper report mentions that a lorry dispatched to take the aircraft away broke down near the crash site. Spare parts were parachuted in from another aircraft to repair the lorry.
