On 23rd February 1940 this aircraft is believed to have being flown from Kenley to Kirkbride but suffered a loss of oil pressure while over the south-lakes. The pilot
made a forced landing in a field near The Oaks and Lindeth but the aircraft stalled just before landing and the undercarriage collapsed on touching down. The aircraft was
not repaired following this incident.
Pilot - F/Lt Geoffrey Alwyne Bradnam Cooper RAF(AAF) (90396).
Passenger? - AC Bassow.
Geoffrey Cooper was born on 18th February 1907 in Leicester. He had trained as a civilian pilot at the Leicestershire Aero Club and gained his Royal Aero Club aviators' certificate on 22nd July 1933 (Cert.No.11256). He then joined the RAF and received a commission to the rank of P/O on 20th September 1933 as a member of 605 (County of Warwick) Squadron in the Auxiliary Air Force. He was promoted to F/O on 14th July 1935 and transferred to 615 (County of Surrey) (Army Co-operation) Squadron on 16th August 1937. He was later promoted to F/Lt on 27th June 1938. If Tutor K4800 was in the care of 12 M.U. at the time of this landing accident near Bowness then it seems likely that he was one of their staff pilots. During the Wartime period nothing is known
of his service other than he was promoted to S/Ldr (temp) on 1st July 1944 and to S/Ldr (war subs) on 13th January 1945. He was Mentioned in Despatches on 1st January 1946. He remained in the Royal Auxilliary Air Force until relinquishing his commission as S/Ldr, retaining the rank of W/Co on 10th February 1954.
Two likely fields where this aircraft may have been force landed are shown in these photographs, the one above is probably the most likely location and would be more likely to be referred to as near "The Oaks". The lower photograph is a reasonably flat field nearby which would equally have made a good choice of landing site but nearer Lindeth rather than The Oaks. I credit Ade Harris with these photographs.
