In the afternoon of 12th March 1945 the crew flying this aircraft were undertaking a target towing flight off the west coast where the crew of another aircraft or ground based gunners would practice firing at the drogue behind the aircraft. A problem with the engine made the pilot attempt to force land the aircraft with it loosing power in the Bootle area and with the windscreen having been splattered in oil. As the pilot went in for the forced landing the aircraft clipped HT cables and it crash landing in the selected field at 16.00hrs. The aircraft was badly damaged and was deemed beyond repair. The location of where this incident occurred may be outside of the National Park area but I have included the incident in this record for the time being until the location can be confirmed.
Pilot - P/O Edward Mieczyslaw Ostrowski PAF (P/2947). Injured.
