On 3rd June 2005 this aircraft was being flown north up the west coast of England at around 1300 feet and in order to avoid flying over the restricted flying zone around Sellafield the pilot turned the aircraft inland and began to climb to avoid high ground ahead. There were layers of cloud covering the higher ground ahead and when the pilot realised that the aircraft was not climbing fast enough to avoid the high ground ahead he attempted to turn the aircraft but also to remain out of the restricted airspace. In turning, the aircraft entered a patch of cloud. On leaving the cloud the aircraft was so close to the ground, combined with no clear route to go to avoid further cloud and with the aircraft's speed just above stalling speed, he attempted a forced landing in a field near Strudda Bank, off the Cold Fell road. At 10.50hrs he landed but the field was rough, the right wing tip struck the ground and the nosewheel broke off. Both pilot and passenger sustained minor injuries.
