Beaufort X8928 near Broomfleet.

At 12.00hrs on 6th August 1941 this 86 Squadron aircraft spun into the ground south of Brough and the pilot was killed, the reason the for this was never found. The incident was recorded in the nearest RAF unit's records, the No.4 E.F.T.S. record book, as occurring at Broomfleet, around five miles south of Brough.

Pilot - P/O Geoffrey Patrick Mandeville RAFVR (64316), aged 26. Buried Leconfield Churchyard, Yorkshire.


The pilot's gravestone in Leconfield churchyard. He was born on 19th February 1915 at Wolverhampton and was the son of Pierce and Mary Mandeville. His father was killed serving in France in September 1916. When the 1939 Register was compiled he was working as a schoolmaster and living at Wisborough Green, Surrey. He received a commission in the RAF on 13th April 1941 to the rank of P/O. At the time of his death his mother was living at Battersea, London.


Beaufort X8928 was built to contract 552915/36 by The Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd. at Filton and was awaiting collection in April 1941. After a short period of storage it was taken on charge by 86 Squadron at North Coates in June 1941. As a result of the incident near Brough on 6th August 1941 Cat.E2/FA damage was recorded and the aircraft written off.
