Yorkshire Air Casualties - 1785 to 1914.

Below is believed to be a complete list of all air fatalities in Yorkshire before the start of the First World War. I suspect there may be a handful of others that I have yet to learn about but would welcome additional information to be able to include them.


2nd June 1852 - James Goulston Balloon - Stone Breaks Hill, Oldham.

Aeronaut - Mr James Goulston, aged 54. Burial location unknown, London.


22nd May 1877 - Balloon "Isle of the Air" - Hull.

Bystander - Miss Lucy Ann Hanson. Aged 13. Burial location unknown.


30th May 1877 - Balloon "Jubilee" - Leeds.

Bystander - Mr Thomas Harding, aged 27. Burial location unknown.


8th August 1891 - George Higgins Gas Balloon No.2 - Kirkstall, Leeds.

Parachutist - "Professor" Mr George Higgins. Aged 39. Buried Kirkstall Churchyard, Yorkshire.


19th May 1902 - Lempriere Balloon - Owlerton, Sheffield.

Parachutist - Miss Edith Brooks. Aged 23. Buried Kirkdale Cemetery, Liverpool.


11th June 1906 - Frederick Bidmead Balloon - Ponden Reservoir, Haworth.

Parachutist - Miss Elizabeth Mary Cove, aged 20/21. Buried Haworth New Cemetery, Yorkshire.


6th December 1911 - Blackburn Mercury - Filey.

Pilot - Mr Hubert Oxley. Aged 25. Buried Heckmondwike Cemetery, Yorkshire.

Pilot - Mr Robert John Weiss. Aged 29. Burial location unknown, believed to be in Germany.


24th December 1912 - Martin-Handasyde Monoplane - Marske.

Pilot - Mr Edward Petre. Aged 26. Buried Fryerning Churchyard, Ingatestone, Essex.


15th May 1914 - BE2a 331 - Hutton Bonville.

Pilot - Lt John Empson RFC, aged 23. Of Yolkfleet Hall. Buried Blacktoft churchyard, Yorkshire.

Engineer - Air Mechanic Reginald George Cudmore RFC, aged 21. Believed buried Stretford Cemetery, Manchester.


22nd July 1914 - Flanders B2 Bi-plane - between York / Leeds.

Engineer - Mr Walter Goodchild. Aged 26, of Ipswich, Essex. Burial location unknown. Died 26th July 1914.
