Lancaster I W4995 at Lindholme airfield.
During the afternoon of 16th May 1945 this 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit was to have been flown on a basic circuits and landings training exercise at Lindholme airfield. After the first take off the aircraft made the first circuit and landed four minutes later at 15.34hrs. Unfortunately when it was travelling down the runway the starboard wheel became detached and burst, eventually both the undercarriage legs appear to have collapsed. The aircraft received a Cat.B/FA damage assessment and was taken away to be repaired in a works factory by A.V.Roe but was never issued to another flying unit again.
Pilot - F/O Walter Alexander Phillips RAFVR (176505).
