Spitfire SM504 damaged in the air, landed at Driffield airfield.
During the morning of 17th October 1945 this 234 Squadron was flown on a cine gun camera training exercise and during the flight the aircraft began to suffer a partial engine failure. At 11.45hrs the pilot made a precautionary landing at Driffield airfield and the landing appears to have seen no other damage to the aircraft. The engine was checked and valve springs were found to have broke, this had then damaged the carburetter butterflies. 234 Squadron was based at Bentwaters on this date but part of the squadron may have been on a detachment closer to Driffield at the time, perhaps attending a course at the Central Gunnery School at Catfoss or using an airfield near Driffield.
Pilot - F/Lt John Oliver Lyle RAF (47833).
