Spitfire R6809 damaged in the air, landed at Carnaby airfield.

During the morning of 15th July 1945 this Central Gunnery School aircraft was flown on an air firing exercise on the ranges off the East Yorkshire coast. The aircraft began to suffer the engine run roughly so the pilot headed back in land and at 10.23hrs he made a gliding landing at Carnaby airfield. Very little other damage to the aircraft resulted and it appears to have landed normally. One of the con-rods was found to have failed.

Pilot - F/Lt Clifford Scott Vos DFC RAF (42284).
