Lancaster B.I PB893 at Skipton on Swale airfield.
On 11th August 1943 eight aircraft from 424 Squadron and eight from 433 Squadron were used to dispose of bomb left over within No.6 Group and drop them into the North Sea. Lancaster PB893 was a 433 Squadron aircraft used on this date, the crews appear to have taken off from Skipton on Swale and landed at East Moor to assist with the clearing of their bomb dump rather than bombs remaining at Skipton on Swale. The task was carried out and the crew of this aircraft returned to Skipton on Swale. While taxying toward a dispersal where it was due to be parked the aircraft struck a fence post that was left remaining just one foot from the dispersal point. Minor damage resulted and the commanding officer questioned why the post was not cut down sooner. It was thought the brakes of the Lancaster may have overheated after landing and had faded by the time it reached the dispersal point.
