Lancaster B.I PA263 at Leeming airfield.

On 23rd August 1945 three 427 Squadron were due to fly bomb disposal flights, to get rid of bombs by dumping them into the North Sea but only one completed the flight, while one was forced back owing to poor weather. Lancaster PA263 was due to be the third aircraft but prior to taking off it sustained damage. At 09.55hrs it was being taxied around Leeming airfield prior to taking off when the starboard axle sheared causing the wheel to collapse. The aircraft sustained minor damage. The breakage was thought to have been due to previous strain on the metal that had gone unnoticed. This pilot was one of the last 427 Squadron pilots to leave the squadron; he left for repatriation in May 1946.
