Wellington X MF556 at Thorne.
On 6th July 1945 this Bomber Command Instructor's School was flown on a single engine flying practice in cloudy weather. The pilots shut down the starboard engine during the flight and undertook the training that involved flying on just the port engine. When it came to restarting the starboard engine the propeller would not unfeather and by this stage the aircraft had already decended. The aircraft was based at Finningley, the crew must have lost height and been so low that it was not possible to reach their base or to reach Lindholme airfield so they force landed it in a field at 14.30hrs between Moorends and Thorne. Lindholme airfield's crash tender despatched at 15.15hrs but no fire broke out. The damage to the aircraft was assessed as being Cat.E/FA and the aircraft was struck off charge on 16th July 1945.
